It started with a drought
In 2022, one of Kenya's worst droughts in decades pushed feed prices up while tonnes of organic waste were still thrown away every day. Studying biology at the University of Nairobi, our founder Abigail Ndekei saw that Black Soldier Fly could connect the two problems, and that what farmers lacked was a way to see inside the colony before it was too late.
A living colony is easy to lose track of
Temperature, moisture and feeding all change from day to day. Small drifts are easy to miss until they've already hurt the batch.
Nothing to see between visits
You only know the conditions when you're standing at the cage. Everything in between is a blind spot.
Guesswork instead of readings
Without numbers, judging whether a cycle is on track comes down to instinct and experience alone.
Problems show up late
Overheating or a substrate drying out often shows only after the larvae have slowed or died.

When a cage or tray needs attention, Mkuu-lima texts the farm's team in plain words, with what to do. No data bundle or open app is needed to receive it, and a second text says when things are back to normal.
